Woman marries corpse in India - March 2007

An Indian woman, despairing over her lover's accidental death when he fell down a well soon after their engagement, insisted on ceremonially marrying his corpse just minutes before the cremation.

"It was for just few minutes the girl was dressed as a bride and then as a widow," K.M. Kapadia, a police officer in the town of Anand in western Gujarat state, said on Saturday.

Wedding attendees sat the corpse up by a fire, the traditional centre of Hindu wedding ceremonies, and chanted some marriage prayers before cremating the body, police said.

"The girl refused to give away the body of her lover for the cremation till she tied the knot with him," Kapadia said.

The bride's parents opposed the marriage but later attended the wedding ceremony and gave their 22-year-old daughter Tulsi Devipujak clothes and utensils as gifts, according to the Hindu tradition.

Pet dog as Bridesmaid - 2003

A bride-to-be is having her pet dog Lucy as her Bridesmaid.

Sonia Wilde said her vicar, the Rev Brian Statham, was shocked when she first asked him but finally agreed to the idea reports the Daily Express.

She said: "You should have seen his face. He said he'd never had a request like it in 26 years."

Sonia is designing Lucy's dress for when she ties the knot with Steve Begley at St Matthew's Church in Edgedley, Stockport, in October.

Sonia added: "I can't think of anybody else I would rather have as bridesmaid. Lucy's my best friend and you want the people you love by your side on the big day"

Engaged in Mid Air - Married under Water - 2003

An Indian couple got engaged in mid-air and a fortnight later, exchanged their wedding vows wearing scuba gear over their traditional wedding clothes 12 feet (3.7 metres) under water in a Bombay suburban pool. The ceremony lasted 36 minutes and 33 seconds.

The pool was decorated to resemble a temple with orchids and marigolds and intricately carved pillars straight from a Bollywood film set.

The couple said that they had felt no fear despite staying submerged for more than half an hour. They were trained by diving instructor Ravi Kulkarni, 35, for more than a month before the wedding day.

The father of the bride, along with other relatives, also entered the water with the officiating Hindu priest to assist the couple, their clothes were weighted down to hold their shape.

They certainly live dangerously!
